Research Interests

The oldest and thickest ice remaining over the Arctic Ocean, referred to as the Last Ice Area (LIA), is projected to retain perennial ice when summer ice has largely disappeared from the rest of the Arctic Ocean. The earlier onset of photosynthesis in spring due to increased light will affect the timing of nutrient utilisation and the character of linked Nitrogen, Carbon and Sulfur cycles. Under the impact of global change, my project investigates biogeochemical pathways using emerging metagenomics and ecological network techniques to identify key processes that influence the connectivity and future development of microbial communities in ice, ice-covered seas and Arctic open waters.
