Research Interests
My project focuses on the physiological mechanisms of acclimation to prolonged periods of darkness in polar diatoms during the polar winter and spring and also, their potentials impact on the different assemblages of in situ phytoplankton communities. Today, there are still significant questions about the ability of these microalgae to adjust their photosynthetic machinery and manage their basic metabolic energy demand at very low irradiances. My research is dividing into two parts, the first being based on laboratory experiments (cell cultures) using an Arctic diatom model (Fragilariopsis cylindrus). The second part is based on the in situ characterisation of these phytoplankton communities during the polar night.
